With their sixth studio album “Superstition”, THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE are concentrating on their synth pop roots, leaving heavy metal influences behind. The 10 tracks are written for the clubs – danceable with a lot of synthesizers and less guitar. Especially “Surrender” reminds of Depeche Mode a lot.
More synthesizers, less guitars.
At least, the lyric’s themes didn’t change. Chibi sings about everyday’s horror and human fears, morbid fantasy and longings. The music is still mystic and melancholic – with one exception: “Oceania” is a really happy song concerning the instruments.
Also the title track is very catchy, so is “Beyond”. THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE released a very cool video to this one. The lyrics are about life on the other side after one’s death. The Canadians remind of their heavier past with “The other side” with a slow, heavy riff. Traditionally, a mystic instrumental track completes the album.
