SPIELBANN are supported by the ASP mastermind.
My first thought when I opened the CD (yes, it’s a physical one!) was: Wow! The digipak hat who booklets and one can see the love that’s been put in it. Reminds me of the good ol’ days when booklets were standard & I sat next to the CD player reading it while listening to the music. So that’s a big plus even before listening to SPIELBANN’s debut “In Gedenken”.
The lyrics are in German, so let me first translate the title for you: Remembrance; one would usually write this on a funeral wrath. That’s kind of weird for a debut album, but most of the song titles fit, so “In Gedenken” should be seen as a topic, a kind of concept connecting the songs loosely.
Dark, melacholic, romantic – typical gothic rock album with new elements.
Special about SPIELBANN is, they have two singers, male & female, & they have a fable for medieval music without overdoing that style. People who like gothic rock will like SPIELBANN even though there is no growling in their music. I would compare them to bands like In Extremo, Subway to Sally & ASP. Latest artist obviously is the greatest supporter of the band – Asp took many jobs in the band like producer & artwork & wrote some of the lyrics.
Another reason the music of SPIELBANN is different from other gothic rock/medieval combos is that Nic Frost’s voice is lower than one would expect in a band like this. There is a lot of harmony in the interplay of the singers & the music, so that the listener can really enjoy all the little stories on “In Gedenken”.
Gothic rock for lovers of the genre.
SPIELBANN’s debut is a melancholic & romantic album. Through the music & the packaging of “In Gedenken”, one can see the musicians put their heart into this & love what they do. I saw them last year at M’Era Luna & also on stage, they show their passion. So give these guys a try. There is a reason why ASP – at lest well-known in German scene – supports them.
