SKÁLMÖLD – Live DVD „Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands“
Three years ago. We write the year 2013 AD. Masses of people come to Harpa, Iceland’s largest concert hall. It’s one of three sold-out shows of SKÁLMÖLD in collaboration with the SINFÓNÍUHLJÓMSVEIT ÍSLANDS. Metal meets Classic, bearded Vikings meet well-dressed intellectuals. What do they have in common? The passion for music, of course!
And these opposites unite in musical love to make the concert so wonderful and unique. When Gunnar Ben enters stage and starts singing in his native tongue, supported by a choir of children and men, goosebumps are inevitable. The voices of over 50 women, children and men in combination with a 90-member orchestra build a strong fundament for the metal sound of SKÁLMÖLD.
So, let’s raise our horns and celebrate with SKÁLMÖLD and the ICELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA the ancient sagas.
Dive deep into magic and wonders; enjoy the power of a musical army who can conquer the world of dreams and imagination, which can bring back to life forgotten heroes and myths. Just listen to ‘Kvaðning’ and you’ll know what I mean. Such a collaboration could have a pathetic and unauthentic ending. But this time it’s somehow different. One reason is of course the musical quality of the recording and filming. But what’s almost more important: Every one of the involved people seems to have a lot of fun while playing this concert!
The content and smiling faces throughout the whole show makes you feeling well while watching, although you can just sit on your couch instead of the concert hall. The orchestra sound fits perfectly to the metal songs and gives the original music the epic character and dynamic it deserves. When the camera shows the audience, it’s pretty unusual to see the people sitting properly in a concert hall instead of a dark, sweaty club. But when they get up of their seats, clap and scream enthusiastically, the familiar metal-concert-feeling comes alive.
I don’t very often understand, why bands release DVDs. There is almost no difference to the audio material of the album and a DVD couldn’t catch the atmosphere of a real concert as well. That’s why „Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands“ is definitely one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen: It’s epic, it’s bombastic, it’s metal at its best! The emotions and fun, settled in an incredible sound will blow you away. I promise!
