After our first meeting at the Dong Open Air 2018, we, Pia and Steffi, drove to Berlin to meet the young and promising band SCARDUSTagain. Together with MORAN MAGAL and the HardChoir STIMMGEWALT, they played in the cozy location Musik und Frieden (“Music and Peace”) in Berlin.
We arrived early that evening because we had arranged an interview with the band after their soundcheck. They told us what they’ve been up to in the last six months and about Noa‘s singing lessons – the video is coming soon.
Metal choir STIMMGEWALT started the evening – and we’re not thrilled.
The night began with STIMMGEWALT, a Metal choir from Berlin consisting of 12 voices and no instruments. They have already shared the stage with VAN CANTO and ORPHANED LAND. I (Pia) like choirs and metal, but only in the background or partly used for the main vocals. When it comes to vocal projects like VAN CANTO or STIMMGEWALT – I’m out! That’s not my kind of music at all and I couldn’t stand more than 30 seconds at the STIMMGEWALT gig… So I am not the person who should judge their music. For me, it’s just vocal overload over a far too long period of time. I preferred spending time at the bar 😛 So we went to the beautiful “Baumhausbar” (treehouse bar) in the venue and enjoyed a cocktail while waiting for SCARDUST.
SCARDUST brought their A-game to Berlin!
We looked forward to seeing SCARDUSTon stage. I (Steffi) already enjoyed their show at the Dong Open Air and was very happy to see their performance again. Pia loves the combination of blasting sound, a good vocalist and skilled musicians. Noa Gruman is a beast on stage and positively impressed me with all her different vocal styles. The stage of Musik & Frieden was too small for a powerful band like SCARDUSTobviously, but they did a great job anyway. The surprise of the night was special guest Patty Gurdy who supported SCARDUSTwith her hurdy-gurdy. She made an amazing vlog about the day of the concert, including backstage impressions and the gig.
With two new songs in their set, SCARDUSTpleased all the fans they had made at their previous concert in Berlin and songs like ‘Arrowhead’ put everyone in the mood for a real Metal show – there is a funny story for this song that Noa told us in our interview at Dong Open Air 2018. If SCARDUSTcontinues like this, they’ll rock bigger stages that fit them in the future, for sure.
MORAN MAGAL was a fitting co-headliner.
Co-headliner MORAN MAGAL promotes her sound as a “unique musical style which is a piano-based Folk Rock with a Gothic Metal edge. Romantic, melodic and powerful.” For this evening in Berlin, she pimped the stage and her keyboard with a lot of decoration. Again, the stage is crowded, because some singers of STIMMGEWALT support her.
After moving from Israel to Germany, she decided to make a band out of her music project – so here she is! Moran is a very emotional singer with a story for every song. In ‘Dark Swan’, for example, she reminds us that we came a long way with women’s rights in our country, but there are a lot of other countries where women are not equal in the eyes of the law. She almost started crying when talking about this. Keep up the good fight, Moran! We are here to support the cause.
The gig itself turned out good, even though the second keyboard didn’t work. The venue was crowded – which was a little surprising because Moran‘s music is special.
