LACUNA COIL, CELLAR DARLING, AEVERIUM – Zeche Bochum (11-12-2017)
Monday night is not the perfect time for a concert, but this is the last concert of the year for us and the combination of LACUNA COIL with CELLAR DARLING and AEVERIUM is just too good.
They came without their keyboarder but with their fan club – AEVERIUM.
We (Kiki & Steffi) already saw AEVERIUM at this year’s Female Metal Event with their acoustic show and END OF THE DREAM’s Micky Huijsmans filling in for Aeva. I (Steffi) was very excited about their tour-gig with Aeva. Sadly, it is without their keyboarder. But hey, AEVERIUM is a creative and humorous band, so they put a hoodie with a photo of the missing musician on stage. Singer Marcel “Chubby” Römer solves the problem with charm. Although the keyboard parts have to be playback, AEVERIUM does a good show and warms up the crowd. This is also thanks to their fan club, which came to support them. Chubby always has a good joke at hand and entertains the audience.
The music of the band is good to dance and headbang because it’s easy to digest. Sadly, the sound isn’t as good as it should be. The bass is too hard and dominant at some points which is annoying. Nonetheless, the short playing time of 30 minutes is quickly done and over. I feel entertained and have fun seeing this German band with its modern sound and old-school way of presentation!
I already wondered at the beginning of AEVERIUM‘s gig, why there are not so many people at the “Zeche”. Maybe more will come later, I thought. I was wrong. Not so many people want to go to a concert on a Monday evening. How sad, they missed an awesome concert.
CELLAR DARLING gets better and better!
Anna is in a very, very good mood! Smiling, headbanging and happy she stands on the stage. Her performance has evolved so much! The last time we saw CELLAR DARLING live at Zeche Bochum (only a few weeks ago), she was calm and hid behind her hurdy-gurdy. The bigger stage today may also be a reason, that she performed more. Or she was just in a very good mood!
Kiki: Indeed, CELLAR DARLING rock even more than only a month ago, when the band played the opener for SERENITY and DELAIN. This time, they get to play a longer set on a less crowded stage so they can move to their heart’s desire and it just shows, that the band has gotten the hang of touring – practice makes perfect, right? Even if the musicians aren’t new to the stage, the more they perform new material the better it all gets. And Anna, Merlin, Ivo and their tour bassist close a perfect set with my favorite song ‘Fire, Wind And Earth’ – what else can a fan like me ask for?!
LACUNA COIL wishes the crowd a ‘Naughty Christmas’!
It’s time for the main course: the Gothfathers step onto the stage in their “Delirium”-clothes and the insanity starts to spread. The venue is half full and all I can think at the moment is
why is LACUNA COIL so underrated?! A band that has stood the test of time since the late nineties throughout the rise of ilegal downloads and later streaming services, while constantly developing their sound and look.
After singer Cristina Scabbia talked to us about the challenges and benefits of the development in the music industry during the band’s career (watch the interview below), I was a little worried that her voice sounded strained and tired. None of that affects her always energetic performance. More noticeable, however, are the technical problems with her microphone, which come to a complete outage. After replacing the wireless mics of both singers by ones with cables, the party comes into full swing.
The setlist is witness to the band’s history with songs like ‘Spellbound’, ‘Trip The Darkness’, ‘Our Truth’ and LACUNA COIL‘s classic version of ‘Enjoy The Silence’ spicing up the newer material. I’m specially happy about hearing and seeing them play ‘My Demons’ live – my favorite song on LACUNA COIL‘s 2016-album “Delirium”. The whole band seems to enjoy the show, with drummer Ryan Blake Folden incorporating tricks with the sticks into his performance and cheering on the crowd from behind his raised drumset. Cristina is chatty today, doing long encouraging speeches between songs, like before ‘Nothing Stands In Our Way’, which closes the set. A three-song encore is introduced by inflatable Christmas tree and snowman. All LACUNA COIL fans can imagine what that means: It’s ‘Naughty Christmas’!! Fake snow hits the air inside Zeche Bochum and after ‘Heaven’s A Lie’ and ‘The House Of Shame’ the lovely Italians say their goodbyes.
