IDES OF GEMINI – “Women”
By the end of April, the new IDES OF GEMINI-album will see the light of day… Or the dark of night – the album itself is, oh, so dark and full of beauty.
IDES OF GEMINI – new line-up, new album.
The Californian band has been around since 2010 and is about to release the third full-length album after “Old World New Wave” (2014) and “Constantinople” (2012). This is the first album, however, with the band’s new line-up, a change that has allowed front woman and founder Sera Timms to concentrate solely on her duties as a vocalist – best decision ever!
As much as I love to see female instrumentalists playing heavy music, IDES OF GEMINI‘s sound has definitely benefitted from the singer’s dedication to the vocals in “Women”. I haven’t heard any of the older work by the band, but I can appreciate the darkness of Timms’ vocals that fit the experimental mood of the songs with precision and technique.
“Women” is gloomy but groovy.
The record starts full of energy, dark and gloomy but strong. “Women” reminds me at times of another band, but darker, much darker – IDES OF GEMINI‘s record sounds like the evil twin of BLUES PILLS. Each of the songs tells a story about a woman, a female public or historic figure or even fictional characters, so the concept seems to be the mysterious nature of women – from whose perspective? That’s for the listener to interpret I think.
The certainty is the captivating experimental sound with notable post-punk and proggressive rock influences. Each song has an artwork in itsself, each of the ten tracks has at least something to like, a fantastic element: be it the seductive verses on ‘The Dancer’ or the nostalgic distrtion on the guitars of ‘Queen Of New Orleans’, or the whole of ‘Heroine’s Descent’, which is my favorite song of the album. Other highlights include the openers ‘Mother Kiev’ and ‘The Rose’ – you can listen to the latter on a short IDES OF GEMINI-feature by CVLT Nation.
