BABYMETAL – “Metal Resistance”
It’ll once again turn your metal world upside down,
Of course, “Resistance” is musically colorful! There are die hard metal songs, electronic stuff plus influences from other genres, but in sum, compared to their debut, BABYMETAL focus more on metal. So if you’d just change the singer, it would mostly sound like a normal metal album. Especially ‘Yava!’ is modern metal at it’s best with a lot of electro. But before we enter that song, ‘Awadama fever’ reminds us why this band is called BABYMETAL also lyricalls – the song is about chewing gum, as far as I understand.
Another thing making BABYMETAL so interesting is that Su-Metal is a really good singer. Songs like ‘Amore’ proof it – it’s a mid-tempo, not so cheesy ballad. ‘Meta Taro’ will be the favorite song of all pagan/medieval metal lovers. It sounds very heroic with a refrain that’s a mixture of a military and a children’s song. Weird and masterly at the same time. ‘GJ!’ and ‘Sis.Anger’ are songs sung primary by the younger girls Yuimetal and Moametal.
What can you expect from a BABYMETAL album? Nothing? Everything?
‘No rain, no rainbow’ then is the cheesy, dramatic ballad which makes us almost forget that this is BABYMETAL, a cute, funny and crazy band from Japan. Okay, the Japan metal touch is still there, which makes the ballad even more wonderful. But everybody who misses the craziness now will be reconiciled with ‘Tales of the destinies’. If there really should be a song structure, it’s weird to the core. The band mixes everything possible and impossible.
In some songs, BABYMETAL sing sentences or words in English, but on “Restistance”, we get a full song in English: ‘The One’. And the girls of course do a good job on this one, too. The song is an epic mid-tempo ballad with a listenable guitar riff and – unfortunately – the last song of the album. But with 54 minutes we get our badly needed BABYMETAL dose for the next month, hoping for a lot of shows and festival gigs.
