Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” – Review
The universe of Marvel is huge and entangled. So it’s no surprise, that THE DEFENDERS will get a show in August 2017. They are the down-to-earth pendant to THE AVENGERS, not saving the world but solving everyday problems in New York’s “Hell’s Kitchen”. The four (anti-)heroes are Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Daredevil’s own show on Netflix has already two seasons; the first one of Jessica Jones was released 2015. And hey, we are Metal & High Heels, of course
we want to talk about the drinking, swearing, bad-tempered and awesome JESSICA JONES!
Jessica Jones is an anti-heroine who works in New York as a private detective. She had once been a superhero with costume and idealistic goals, but that’s over since a man named Kilgrave crossed her way. Kilgrave (for the comic nerds among you: it’s the Netflix-version of Purple Man, the antagonist of Daredevil and later also Jessica Jones and Luke Cage) is a manipulative, intelligent asshole. He has the superpower to impose his will over people. Give him all your money? Kill yourself? Or the ones you love? You will do it if Kilgrave want you to. Jessica Jones has very bad luck to meet this man – with her extreme strength, she’s a perfect tool for Kilgrave to reach his goals.
This storyline happened before the series started and it is the plot-origin of the events of the first season. Jessica had given up her super hero career and works as a private detective in the dirtiest and hardest parts of New York. With a grumpy cat-attitude, whiskey as her one true love and never short of a wisecrack, she tries to get over her traumatic experiences. I don’t want to spoil the show, so I will give no further description of the story in detail – just one thing: Jessica has the chance to take revenge and save the world from Kilgrave (well, what else, it’s a super-hero-series 😀 ).
The on-going plot is based on the
psychic twist between Jessica and Kilgrave,
both are strong, equal opponents. But Jessica needs time to realise that and to overcome her self-doubt. The viewer follows her path to self-awareness and can observe her development. Without defaming herself, Jessica goes on and on, a fighter against her past and the manipulation by Kilgrave.
It is mental strength,
which is necessary to win the fight. What irony, that Jessica’s power is physical super strength. Your body can be abnormally strong, but it’s useless if your mind is weak. Jessica’s personal evolution is the main reason that makes JESSICA JONES so addictive to watch.
Have you watched the Netflix-series? Tell us in the comments: who’s you favourite Marvel hero! And are you looking forward to THE DEFENDERS and another season of JESSICA JONES?
